Up to eighty percent of the value being created on global stock markets today is being generated by intangible assets – from brands and customer relationships, to human capital and intellectual property – but traditional performance measures no longer capture that value.
CFOs whose organizations don’t understand how to identify, measure and monitor these new value drivers risk being disrupted by more nimble competitors that do: think Airbnb in hospitality and Uber in transportation. These companies have few physical assets, but high valuations, based on their ability to harness data, customer information, and intellectual property in pursuit of growth and value creation.
This was the topic of a recent Oracle BeLux Finance Lunch, sponsored by Accenture and attended by more than 20 Belgian CFOs at the two-star Michelin Restaurant De Pastorale in Rumst-Reet.
In his keynote, guest speaker Peter Simons, Development & Innovation Specialist at the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), shared the outcomes of research conducted by CIMA on how modern CFOs are building the next-generation finance functions that are able to better measure, monitor, invest in, and report on the new digital KPIs driving value creation today.
This was followed by a roundtable debate moderated by Christophe Vandenbroucke, Senior Finance Director EMEA at Oracle, during which Belgian CFOs shared best practices in this challenging domain. Accenture’s Finance & Performance Management Lead, Joris Van Malderen, participated in the discussions, contributing Accenture’s point of view on how we help clients achieve their Finance Transformation goals.
